How to Increase your Sales at a Makers Market

It doesn’t matter what you’re selling, there are some great things you can do to increase your sales at a makers market. Read on for some great ideas.

Business Signage

The first thing you should invest in is a business sign. Whether you opt for an acrylic sign or a plastic banner type one, it’s the first thing most potential customers will see. The same thing applies to retail stores too. No matter how much effort you put into store design, it’s your store sign people will see first in most instances.

If you haven’t already, it’s worth spending some time (and possibly money) coming up with a business logo. You can add this to your business sign, business cards and even your product itself, depending what you sell. Depending on your budget, you could use a retail design agency in London, or even create something yourself.

Consider Business Cards

When you have a stall at a makers market or an event like it, it’s worth having business cards available. If someone loves your product but doesn’t have enough cash on the day, they can easily find you later on. Having cards freely accessible on your table is a great idea. It’s also worth popping one in with each order, to hopefully increase repeat custom.

If your business is mainly Etsy based, consider using a link shortening service so people can easily find you. If you use something like Facebook marketplace or eBay, it’s worth thinking about investing in a private domain and website for your business too. This can help give the impression your business is professional, easily accessible and trustworthy.

Dressing Your Table

Once potential customers are in front of your table, it’s time for your products to shine. It’s important your table is laid out in a way that allows people to clearly see what’s on offer. You may want to use baskets to keep products tidy, or even add some fairy lights to make your table look extra festive – depending on the season or location.

It’s worth considering some small signs to display details about each product. Displaying things like prices, product information, ingredients or offers will mean people can make an informed decision about any potential purchases.

Avoid Clutter

Speaking of your table, make sure you avoid clutter wherever possible. Most potential customers won’t appreciate having to rummage through your products to see what’s available. On top of this, items you’re selling may become damaged. If you’re selling clothes, consider finding a way to hang them up so they can be clearly seen by customers.

When you’re looking to increase your sales at a makers market, it’s important people can see what’s available. Don’t keep all shoes in their boxes – lids will become damaged if customers are taking them off every time they want a look. If you’re selling things which smell, (wax melts, bath bombs etc), make sure there’s at least samples available for potential customers to consider.

Publicity is Important

Make sure you promote the event on your social media pages ahead of time, so people can decide to attend before they make other plans. This form of business communication and promotion is free, and will hopefully increase your sales at a makers market.

It won’t do your business as much good if you post at 2pm that you’ve had a great time at the event as it will if you share a week in advance that you’re looking forward to showcasing your new range at the event. It may also be worth reaching out to some other (non competitive) businesses who are attending to discuss cross promotion.

For example, if you sell wax melts, it may be a great opportunity to discuss promoting a business which is selling crystals or doing hand massages – each of these are great self care, after all! If you promote their business and they return the favour, you could access new customers from their social media followers, with no costs involved.

So there you have it! Five great ways to increase your sales at a makers market! Let me know in the comments if you have any other suggestions.
