Book Review – The Secret Child By Caroline Mitchell

It’s no secret that I am a huge bookworm. I’ve always got a book on the go, and frequently read more than one a week! So when I was asked to review Caroline Mitchell’s new book, I was happy to agree. The Secret Child By Caroline Mitchell is a psychological thriller, which is hard to put down.

So read on to find out my thoughts…

DI Amy Winter knows evil. She’s lived through it.

Four-year-old Ellen is snatched by a stranger in the dead of night. Her devastated mother, Nicole, receives four identical phials and a threatening note in a familiar scrawl that chills her to the bone. But she always knew this would happen. She’s been expecting it for years . . .

According to the note, one of the phials is poisoned. Nicole is given a deadly challenge: if she drinks one, the sadistic kidnapper will notify the police of Ellen’s location. The sender claims to be Luka Volkov but Luka is supposed to be dead, killed long ago in a fire that haunts all those involved.

DI Amy Winter is still reeling from the discovery that she is the daughter of a serial killer, and her childhood trauma only makes her more determined to bring Ellen home. When another child is taken, Amy finds herself in a race against time. To rescue the children, must she seek help from the one person she wants to forget?

My Thoughts on The Secret Child By Caroline Mitchell:

This is the second book in the DI Amy Winter series, but I haven’t read the first. I expected to struggle to keep up with the main characters’ backstory, but that wasn’t the case at all. By the time I was 4 chapters in, I was desperate to know more.

Usually, I only read while settling my son to sleep. He needs peace and quiet, and darkness, so my kindle paper white is my best friend for a couple of hours each night. Before I was 50% of the way through this book, I had found myself reading at the table, in the bath and in my own bed, too.

Each chapter seemed to leave me with more questions I was desperate for the answers to, and the ending didn’t disappoint! If you’re a fan of crime thrillers. I’d definitely recommend reading The Secret Child By Caroline Mitchell.
