Next month, I’ll be turning 35. I don’t feel mature enough to call myself 25, so it’s more than a bit scary thinking I’ll officially be closer to 40 than I am 30, soon. If this past year has taught me anything, it’s that life is short and we have to take time out to enjoy ourselves every once in a while.
Since my Mum died, I have been a firm believer that every year we’re alive is a cause for celebration. I was 23 when my Dad died, and 32 when I lost my Mum. I guess in a lot of ways, being parentless so young has made me realise that life is short. There’s no point feeling miserable about getting older – Every year is a bonus, in my book!
My hubby is 40 next month too, so it’s a double whammy of celebrations for us. He’s definitely not on team celebrate though. I think he’d happily pretend his birthday isn’t happening. (Aside from the presents – he definitely wants those)!
How Am I Celebrating?
My birthday itself is a school day, so I guess it’ll start the same as every other school day – a crazy, mad dash to get the kids ready for school! (With a few cards thrown into the mix, and a gift, if I’ve been a good girl)! I want to put the dogs into doggy daycare, so I can have the day to myself, without worrying about walking them. The evening will probably involve cake of some description, but I don’t think we will be going out for a meal or anything.
The only thing I ever ask for on my birthday or for Mother’s Day is breakfast in bed. I’m hoping I’ll get a belated one the weekend after I turn 35. It’s hard for us to get out as a couple as childcare isn’t easy to come by when you’re special needs parents. The nights when Sam does have respite, we are both so exhausted, all we want to do is sleep.
If I could do anything I wanted for my birthday, I’d love for us to get away to Forest Holidays again. We went a few years ago, and it’s simply stunning. Unfortunately, the kids are in school now, so it’s never going to happen. Not to worry though – I’ll be happy with a cup of tea in bed, and a full night’s sleep!
Are you 35 yet? What did you get up to? If you haven’t, what do you think you’ll get up to when you’re turning 35?
